Padres 5, Mariners 4: Cameron Maybin's RBI single snapped a tie to ignite a four-run sixth inning and Clayton Richard tossed seven solid frames as visiting San Diego staved off a late Seattle rally.
Everth Cabrera ripped a run-scoring triple and Chase Headley and Nick Hundley added RBI singles for the Padres, who won for just the fifth time in 20 outings.
Making his first start in 11 days due to stiffness in his back, Felix Hernandez (4-5) looked sharp before he ran into trouble in the sixth inning. Maybin ripped an RBI single to shallow center to plate Yonder Alonso and Hundley promptly followed with a run-scoring single to right center.
Hernandez uncorked a wild pitch to plate Maybin before Cabrera capped the Padres' scoring by drilling an RBI triple to center field. The former Cy Young Award winner permitted five runs on nine hits in six innings.
The offensive outburst was enough for Clayton Richard (3-7), who posted his first victory in seven road starts this season. Richard allowed one run on eight hits and struck out three.
Michael Saunders collected three hits - including a solo homer in the ninth inning - and Munenori Kawasaki added an RBI single for the Mariners, who fell to the Padres for just the second time in eight meetings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Hernandez took the mound for the first time since June 1 as the Mariners elected to be cautious with their ace. ... San Diego, which improved to 2-2 on its current nine-game road trip, is now 7-21 away from home this season.
