Mariners 4, Yankees 2: Jesus Montero snapped a tie with an RBI single in the third inning while Felix Hernandez outdueled Freddy Garcia as host Seattle evened the three-game series with its third win in four contests.
Michael Saunders belted a solo home run as the Mariners handed the American League East-leading Yankees their fifth loss in six games.
New York lost third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who was hit by a pitch from Hernandez in the eighth inning and suffered a non-displaced fracture of his left wrist.
Acquired from New York last offseason, Montero gave Seattle a 2-1 lead with a single to right field that plated Brendan Ryan. John Jaso followed with a sacrifice fly that doubled the advantage.
Hernandez (9-5) allowed two runs and four hits over 7 1/3 innings en route to his fifth consecutive victory. The Mariners' ace, who struck out four while walking three and hitting three batters, improved to 7-5 lifetime against the Yankees.
Tom Wilhelmsen struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 11th save.
Garcia (4-4) suffered the loss despite allowing just three runs and five hits with eight strikeouts in 7 1/3 frames.
Curtis Granderson belted his 27th homer for the Yankees, who fell to 1-5 on their seven-game road trip.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Granderson recorded two of New York's five hits. ... The Mariners finished with six hits, including two apiece by Saunders and Kyle Seager. ... Seager registered his AL-leading 34th two-out RBI.
