Sharks 4, Canucks 1: Joe Pavelski recorded his 19th career two-goal performance and Patrick Marleau continued his torrid start with a goal and an assist as host San Jose remained perfect through five games this season.

Captain Joe Thornton also notched a goal and an assist while Antti Niemi secured his 100th career win with 23 saves for the Sharks, who are off to the best start in franchise history and earned coach Todd McLellan his 200th career victory. McLellan is seven wins away from surpassing Ron Wilson for the franchise lead.

Alex Burrows scored for Vancouver, which had won its previous four visits to San Jose.

Thornton got the Sharks on the board with a shot from the left faceoff circle just 43 seconds into the game. Pavelski made it 2-0 at 3:26 as he intercepted a pass by Canucks defenseman Alex Edler and beat Cory Schneider from alone in the slot.

Burrows halved the deficit midway through the second. Niemi stopped Burrows' shot from the top of the right circle, but the rebound went off Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle's skate and past the goaltender at 11:05.

Marleau restored the two-goal lead less than four minutes later when the puck went off his skate and into the net for his league-leading ninth tally. Marleau fell one goal shy of becoming the first player in NHL history to score twice in each of the first five games of a season.

Pavelski capped the scoring at 8:14 of the third, when he beat Schneider with a one-timer from the top of the right circle. Thornton notched his 764th career assist on the play, moving him past Chris Chelios for 37th place on the all-time list.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Boyle did not play in the third period, but no reason was given. ... Brad Stuart's assist on Thornton's goal was his 155th point as a Shark, tying Mike Rathje for second on the franchise list among defensemen. ... San Jose LW Ryane Clowe tied a franchise record with eight penalties set by Link Gaetz on March 6, 1992 against Pittsburgh. Clowe's career-high 35 penalty minutes mark the sixth time a Shark has reached that total. ... Burrows' goal was his 140th as a Canuck, moving him past Dennis Vervegaert and Alex Mogilny for sole possession of 14th place on the franchise list.
